 What is Botox?

Botox is a purified substance that's derived from botulinum toxin, which is produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. It's the same toxin that causes a life-threatening type of food poisoning called botulism. But when you're injected in very small amounts, as with Botox for cosmetic purposes, it can temporarily paralyze muscle activity.

Botox injections are most commonly used on forehead lines, crow's feet (lines around the eye) and frown lines. Wrinkles caused by sun damage and gravity will not respond to Botox.

How does Botox work?

When you contract a muscle, nerves release a chemical messenger, acetylcholine, which attaches to receptors on the muscle's surface. This stimulates the muscle to contract. When Botox is injected into muscles, it blocks these nerve impulses to the muscle. This reduces muscle activity that causes wrinkles to form.
